I'm in love

I am so in love with my new camera.  I have been using Mommy's digital Kodak camera for the last several months.  I enjoyed that camera and took some pretty good shots with it too.  Dealing with the actual use of the camera wasn't always so easy so when she went to California to visit my brothers and nephews I knew that I needed to finally get a digital camera of my own.  I didn't want to do a lot of research (even though I did research it) so I called up Baby Boy and put him on it.  He loves tech stuff and we like to use each other as sounding boards.  So I ended up purchasing a Canon PowerShot A590.  I checked with other online retailers and store ads and the price was comparable and since I have Amazon Prime then I'd get in two days.  Living out in the woods as I do that makes it worth it.  The only issue I ended up having was a couple of days later the price was reduced but with a quick email to customer service I was refunded the difference (they have a 30 day Post-Order Price Guarantee) so all is well.

There are so many cool features (a lot that most people will never use) that are similar to my standard SLR but in a compact digital package.  I've been snapping pictures like crazy and the close up pictures (weather in the macro setting or not) are awesome.  I'm not going to go into the pros and cons right now..I'm still playing.  I am really happy though and you all will get to share in the loveliness when I start posting all of the pictorial goodness.

Happy Thursday!

THANKS

Thank you, thank you, thank you...A HUGE thank you to Lori over at Morning Glories and Moonflowers.  I entered this giveaway she was having and won.  I received it the other day and emailed my thanks right away, however it has just taken me a bit to be able to post about it.

I was able to choose what pendant image I wanted out of the ones Lori had made.  Once I decided which one I wanted Lori then made it into a necklace just for me.

It arrived in a lovely little lavender organza bag

and here's Penelope modeling it for me

so do I.

For those that want one too Lori  has an etsy shop (with really cute button bracelets too!) or I'm sure you can contact her with email or through her blog.

Thanks again Lori!

Apricots and Cherries Oh My!

Mommy and I spent time at the farms again.  This time we picked apricots and cherries for real bargains.  Apricots were 75 cents/lb u-pick and cherries ranged from 85 cents to $1.95/lb u-pick.  The already picked cherries were $2.50-2.95/lb which is still a better deal than what I've been seeing in the market.  Of course they are all so delicious.  Apparently I'm supposed to make apricot-pineapple preserves for Mommy even though I've only watched her can when I was younger.  I'll definitely have to record that process when I do it.  Here's our haul from the farm and then some cleaned up images when I halved and pitted 16 cups of cherries...

100_5885_3

I was the ladder climber and at times I was blindly picking and tossing the apricots to Mommy

100_5886

Here are our boxes...

100_5887_2

We cleaned up, ate a light lunch at High Country Orchards and then went cherry picking

100_5896_4

They are so delicious, here they are cleaned

100_5924

pitted and halved, oh how I wish I still had a cherry pitter...

and some cleaned apricots too.

So yummy and fresh.

I wish they all could be California....rolls

Oh how I love a good California Roll.  Following up on last week's post this is another dish that can be converted into almost anything that you want it to be, although it really wouldn't be a California Roll at that point but who cares, I'm not going to be a stickler about this, make whatever you'd want to eat.  There are also lots of how-tos and videos of how to make the rolls and the sushi rice out there; all you need to do is type what you want into a search engine.  Most of the ingredients and tools can be found online as well (Amazon has nori, wasabi powder, hangiris and bamboo mats)

California Rolls

Ingredients

1 large avocado

1/2 package imitation crab

1 large cucumber

about 2 cups prepared sushi rice (see note below)

nori (pressed seaweed wrapper)

NOTE: Rice - you need a short grain rice (I've purchased it in the bulk section of many stores under the name sushi rice).  I've also just used the Cal-Rose brand with good results.  The purpose of this rice is to make sure it's sticky and a long grain just doesn't do the trick.  DO NOT USE INSTANT RICE! To prepare the rice: The rice is cooked however you usually prepare rice (stove top or rice cooker usually).  I use equal parts rice and water (usually 2 cups to 2 cups) and put it in the rice cooker (it's easy, I just fill it up with the rice and water, put the lid on, push the lever down to cook and walk away).  While the rice is cooking I prepare the sushi rice vinegar if I don't already have some made up which I usually do.

In a small sauce pan heat 4 tablespoons of rice vinegar (rice vinegar has a milder flavor than just plain white vinegar but I have used that as well and if that's what you have the just use it) with 2 tablespoons of white sugar and 2 teaspoons of salt.  Cook over medium heat but do not bring to a boil.  Once the sugar and salt is dissolved then remove from heat.

After the rice is cooked I spoon it out into a non-reactive container to cool; of course by non-reactive I mean non-metal (the metal can react to the vinegar mixture and distort the taste).  Traditionally a  hangiri is used but they can be expensive (although nowadays they are becoming more prevalent and therefore you can find some economical ones - it's something on my wishlist).  A hangiri is a shallow tub made of wood that keeps the rice moist while the rice is seasoned and cools down.  You'll want something wide and shallow so the rice can cool somewhat quickly and evenly.  I've used a shallow wooden salad bowl (the big serving bowl) and I've also used my regular 9in x 13in casserole dish.

Here's my mise en place:

bowl with water and dishcloth

cutting board

ingredients

bamboo sushi mat covered in plastic wrap (Note: The plastic wrap makes for easy clean up.  I've found the small bamboo sushi mats all over for a buck or two.  If you don't have one I used a kitchen towel with a layer of plastic wrap (just make sure that you pull the plastic wrap out after the first turn then continue rolling).)

Kitchen knife

Wasabi powder or paste (that's what the little can is next to the white bowl).

Just like with the Vietnamese Spring Rolls, I like to have everything cut and in place so I can roll and cut all at once.

780844r11516_016

I pat down the sushi rice onto the Nori leaving the edges bare since things will spill out once I began rolling.  I also leave more space at the top to finish it off and end it correctly.

780844r11314_014

First I add the crab in a row about a third of the way up from the bottom.

780844r11213_013

Then the yummy avocado on top of the crab.

780844r11112_012

I'd normally add cucumber here too (I was really hungry for these and didn't have any cucumbers at the time and living in the woods I couldn't just run to the store).  I begin rolling from the bottom up.

780844r11011_011

Then I slice.  I keep a bowl of water with a dishcloth in it (shown in the top photo) and wipe the blade of the knife down in between cuts to clean it up and keep the mess down while slicing (similar to keeping the knife clean when slicing a cheesecake).

780844r10910_010

After that it's all about enjoying them with some tamari and wasabi.

I tend to have leftover ingredients for both this and the spring rolls that's why I like to make them pretty close together and leftover cucumbers, crab or avocado can easily be added to the spring rolls.  I've also added sticks of carrots and daikon to my California roll as well. Daddy doesn't like the nori (nor does he like the rice paper wrapper) so it all gets mixed up into a salad for him with the wasabi tamari as dressing.

This is another dish that can be vegetarian/vegan by omitting the crab and packing it with veggies.

I was also going to note that I've kept both the spring rolls and California rolls in the fridge and didn't find too many problems with taste or texture.  For some purists they would never keep them in the fridge believing that they should be eaten once made I however like to have them in my lunch the next day and enjoy them just as much.  Play around with it and see what you like...it's just food.

A Very MERRY Christmas in July: Part Two

As I wrote yesterday, I had a lot of fun with this swap and really enjoyed the items I made for Elizabeth.  Many of my items crossed over into several categories so I'm just going to show what I sent and not list them in any particular order.

100_5801_4

Since Elizabeth and her new husband golf I thought this golf ball monogrammer was cute for them

100_5806

Here's some stationery: cute monogram note cards, sticky notes (regular size and smaller ones), and a pen that goes with it all

100_5807

Soap, bath salt and bath fizz from the Avocado collection

100_5805_2

Two sets of handmade bobby pins, these were fun to make, I tried to pick out colors that I thought Elizabeth would like and wear (got the idea from my previous swap partner Rebecca and the P3 swap).

100_5726_5

From reading Elizabeth's blog I knew that she liked Jackie O and listed her as someone from whom she'd get advice from so I made her a Jackie Journal so she could write down her own thoughts and advice.

100_5851

I also made some holiday return address labels.  They are the same design (mittens) but one set of thirty was printed out in grays and one set in pink and green so that they have a choice when they send out Christmas cards.  She also received some wine charms, a green and blue luggage tag, a frosted glass votive and a yummy Trapp candle (one of my faves).  And since it was a Christmas theme I sewed her a stocking out of the plaid fabric (that I was using as a background for some of the pics above) from a pattern I just made.  I liked it so much I know that I'll be making a lot of stockings this year!

100_5949_2

I packed everything up in the stocking

100_5956

then whipped up a quick card and shipped it off

100_5957_2

Hope you all are having a joyous Sunday!!

A Very MERRY Christmas in July: Part One

I'm still very excited about my Prep-E Christmas in July.  It was a lot of fun to do and I want to thank Erin for hosting such a great swap.  Elizabeth and I received our packages on the same day (completely unplanned) even though she got hers a few hours earlier than me (but she's also a few hours ahead of me).

I opened the J. Crew box (so preppy) and was enthralled by the beauty of it all:

Show Me Your Dress Form

Dress_form_button

Tiffany over at ShabbyScraps has/had a problem.  She wanted to adopt Nadia but her husband wasn't liking it  (you can read the full story here and here), so she cried out to her fellow bloggers for help.  She needed to show her husband that others have adopted Nadia's brethren and that she (Tiffany) was not crazy for a) wanting Nadia and b) wanting Nadia to live in their bedroom.  Tiffany asked us to show our dress forms whatever they may be.  I'm sure we'll get to see all shapes, sizes and ages since there are about fifty participates joining in on the fun.  Those that have been here before have already met Millicent although not formally...she modeled for me a couple of Fabulous Friday Finds ago.

Millicent and her twin sister Penelope were adopted by Mommy and me back in December of 2006.  They really enjoy their new homes and get to dress up in the greatest of clothes.

Like:

Wedding dresses

100_5123

and evening dresses and aprons

100_0624_2

day dresses

100_2097

and great jewelry

100_2084

and sometimes they get put to work

100_4612_2

I also use Penelope as and actual dress form and make clothes with her, so sometimes the forms are functional and sometimes they're just pretty.

I can't wait to see what everyone else has done with their dress forms.

Happy Friday!!!

Preppy Christmas in July

A huge THANK YOU!! to my swap partner Elizabeth.  I received my package yesterday evening and was overwhelmed...it was so beautifully wrapped and packaged and the presents were wonderful.  I'm going to write about this in more detail for Saturday's post but I wanted to make sure I thanked Elizabeth and gave you all a little something to whet your appetite to come back when I can give this swap a proper posting.
